Nestled amidst the ancient oaks of John’s Island, Joseph Fields Farm spans 50 acres of certified organic soil. It is a sanctuary of Gullah-Geechee heritage. Joseph Fields, a third-generation farmer who traded his welding torch for a plow in 1973, leads the operation with a philosophy centered on hard work and land stewardship. This legacy was forged by Robert Sr. and Nancy Fields, whose principles continue to guide the family today. The farm’s transition to organic practices over a decade ago wasn't merely a business pivot; it was a response to a community calling for chemical-free food. Alongside his wife Helen and manager Devonne, Joseph orchestrates a year-round symphony of harvests. Visitors find everything from the famous John’s Island tomatoes and collard greens to vibrant strawberries and muscadine grapes. Quality is paramount. The mission extends beyond the furrow, aiming to remediate the earth while ensuring healthy produce remains affordable for every Charleston resident. Located at 3129 River Road, the farm stands as a community cornerstone. It bridges cultural lines through the universal language of fresh, local food. Tours are always welcomed, inviting neighbors to witness the richness of the soul behind the soil.
